Situated at 2 hours distance from Sydney and 40 minutes from Newcastle, The Hunter Valley is New South Wales's famous wine region. Newcastle, located at the mouth of the Hunter River, is the largest city in the region. Its immediate metropolitan area includes Lake Macquarie. Most of the wine producers welcome self-drive tourists or tour buses. A good suggestion is to stay at one of many accommodation offerings the Valley has on offer and tour the local wineries over a few days. Children are also catered for at many of the wineries with children activities. The Hunter Valley Gardens, dawn balloon rides are other activities for tourists.
