Jakarta, with an estimated 10 million inhabitants, is the most crowded and culturally diverse city in South East Asia. As Indonesia's capital, it is the country's economic, political and cultural center. Despite notoriously heavy traffic, the city is filled with vibrant cosmopolitan shopping areas and exciting nightlife.
Batavia, once dubbed "The Jewel of Asia" and "Queen of the East," is the 17th century colonial city built by the Dutch. As the capital of the Dutch West Indies, it was an important link in trade routes and commerce which remains an important historical landmark today.
Affectionately known as "The Big Durian," Jakarta is often compared to the large fruit that emits a distinctively strong, penetrating odor which can cause both appreciation and dislike. As the center and melting pot of Indonesian culture, Jakarta is a city of extreme contrasts which may seem a bit overwhelming, but at the same time exciting.
