Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the country's third-largest urban complex. World-class skiing, hiking, golf, white water rafting, mountain biking, wind surfing, whale watching, and internationally renowned wineries are all within two hours of this booming cosmopolitan area. Hot air balloon rides are also popular here, and floating above one can see verdant strips of beautiful parkland along the meandering banks of the river Avon.
Known for its award winning gardens, theater, and modern art galleries, Christchurch is host to a wide range events, including the Festival of Romance, the International Buskers Festival, the winter Arts Festival, and Showtime Canterbury.
One of Christchurch's best known attractions is the International Antarctic Centre provides visitors with fun and informative, and exciting interactive displays and activities including penguin feeding, and 4D video presentations and the popular Hagglund ride. The centre is a joint venture between New Zealand, the US and Italy, and also houses an Antarctic passenger terminal.
Chustchurch is a great city to visit because of its beauty, range of activities and proximity to other great natural attractions. It also has lovely accommodations both in the city and in the nearby environs. The gateway to the South Island, Chistchurch will not disappoint.
Note: The Central City and some eastern suburbs suffered earthquake damage in 2011, but the city is fully functional, and continues to be a great place to live visit!
