New Zealand's capital city is set amidst rolling green hills on a glistening harbor, with a vibrant downtown area that boasts a disproportionate number of restaurants, cafés, bars, galleries, shops and theatres. Said to be the coolest of all capital cities, Welly is locked in an ongoing battle with Auckland for hippest city in New Zealand, and the two are always side by side for position on lists of world cities with the highest quality of life.
Wellington, also know as "Wellywood" has become an important center for the film industry, largely as result of the Lord of The Rings being produced here, and tours to the location sites have become a very popular activity. It is also an important culture home to Te Papa, the national museum, which tells the story of New Zealand' history through bold, interactive exhibits.
Wellington in ot on a beautiful destination all on its own, but there are a plethora of spectacular day trips within an hours distance from here.
Wairarapa, and Marlborough, the area's wine growing regions, are fast becoming internationally renowned for producing outstanding Pinot Noir, and the convenient proximity to Wellington has lead to an explosion of boutique wineries, cafes and world class restaurants in the quaint little towns that dot the rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves against the backdrop of a stunning mountain vista.
And speaking of stunning, another awesome daytrip is the extraordinary Kapiti Coast and Kapiti Island, an internationally acclained nature reserve that provides a habitat for some of the world's rarest and most endangered birds. The island is one of New Zealand's most valuable nature reserves and features glorious sunsets, untouched native forest and dramatic stunningly beautiful landscapes.
And that's not nearly all. In Wellington you are always just minutes from great surfing, mountain biking, the wildly panoramic tram ride, kayaking, hiking, great music, a vibrant nightlife, and if you are traveling to or from the South Isalnd, the ferry that travels the Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton is one of New Zealand's most iconic experiences, and one of the world's most breathtaking cruises. So with so much to do, and such a gorgeous location, Wellington may be the biggest surprise of any New Zealand vacation.
